Welcome to the Sauntering Society!

An early morning walk is a blessing for the whole day.

Henry David Thoreau

We are a community based in southern Indiana committed to sauntering, the spiritual practice of walking mindfully in Nature to experience the divine Soul, who is present and fills all things.

Sauntering is the time-honored practice of walking contemplatively in Nature. The word saunter is a combination of two words – saint and terrain, or holy land. To saunter means to walk in Nature mindfully, observantly and, one might say, prayerfully. Sauntering cultivates within us serenity, wholeness and power, so that we can engage life with confidence, joy and achievement.

At the Sauntering Society we seek the cultivation of our souls through sauntering and other spiritual practices to develop a contemplative, confident, affirmative life that we can experience each day, whether it be at work, school, in the home, in conversation with friends or in solitude.

Sauntering is also a community affair! We gather together regularly for group saunters at local parks and other scenic areas. We also gather in homes, coffee shops and other locations to share in conversation, grow in friendship, plan outings and engage in spiritual formation studies as we seek to create lives of excellence, beauty and love. Everyone is welcome to join in our group saunters and other events.

Our gathering dates and times for group saunters as well as indoor gatherings are posted on our Events page. We hope you’ll join us and reap the physical, emotional and spiritual benefits of sauntering, as we cultivate soul growth, friendships, a connection with Nature and a deep communion with the God Within.
