In every walk with nature, one receives far more than he seeks.
John Muir
I’ve been sauntering since I was a young boy, walking the fields and woodlands of my central Indiana childhood home, and later the hills and hollers of central Kentucky where I lived as a youth and young adult. I now live with my wife, Michelle, outside of Charlestown, Indiana. I hold a Master of Divinity degree from Asbury Theological Seminary and have served as a pastor in the Wesleyan tradition for over twenty years. I have also been a life-long reader and student of Ralph Waldo Emerson and other great western spiritual writers and thinkers who gave primacy to the Soul, the God Within.
I love going for a saunter every chance I get, writing and singing songs for guitar, reading non-fiction (especially Emerson, Thoreau and anything Transcendentalist), sharing time with friends and family, and lifting heavy things at the gym.
Over the decades, I have desired to facilitate a way for all of us to cultivate our souls and find physical, mental and spiritual health by encountering the Soul within ourselves through contemplative immersion in Nature. This is my hope for The Sauntering Society. Sauntering – both outwardly in nature and inwardly as a contemplative practice – is an ancient and transformative practice that leads us to discover, engage and demonstrate the power and passion of a life awakened to the Soul.
