Welcome to the Sauntering Society!

An early morning walk is a blessing for the whole day.

Henry David Thoreau

We are a community based in southern Indiana committed to sauntering.

Sauntering is the time-honored practice of walking contemplatively in Nature. The word saunter is a combination of two words – saint and terrain, or holy land. To saunter means to walk in Nature mindfully, observantly and, one might say, prayerfully, to increase our awareness of the omnipresence, omniscience and omnipotence of God Within. Sauntering cultivates within us serenity, wholeness and power, so that we can engage life with confidence, joy and achievement.

The practice of sauntering can bring us to an awareness of our Divine center, the Christ Within us, our true self. From this center flows unlimited power and wisdom that brings abundant life. From this Divine center flows a quiet, contemplative, confident, affirmative life that we can experience each day, whether it be at work, school, in the home, in conversation with friends or in solitude. Saunters can be practiced in solitude or with others.

The Sauntering Society gathers regularly for group saunters at local parks and other scenic areas. We also gather in homes, coffee shops and other locations to share in conversation, grow in friendship, plan outings and engage in spiritual formation studies as we seek to create lives of excellence, beauty and love. Everyone is welcome to join in our group saunters and other events.

Our gathering dates and times for group saunters as well as indoor gatherings are posted on our Events page. We hope you’ll join us and reap the physical, emotional and spiritual benefits of sauntering, as we cultivate soul growth, friendships, purpose and abundant through a deep communion with the God Within.
